WOPR 97 Support FAQ

This FAQ lists common questions and answers we get for WOPR Technical Support. They are listed more or less in the order of frequency that they are asked. If you don't find your answer here, you can get email support at support@wopr.com.

If you have general Word / Office questions, a good place to ask is in the WOPR Lounge. We also have lots of Office Tips, Bug-alerts and Fixes at http://www.wopr.com/wopr97/office97.htm

When I click on the button that says, "Click here to Add/Remove WOPR 97 components", nothing happens.
Or-
WOPR just won't install. I get error messages and it won't complete the installation.

If you installed Internet Explorer 4, that might be the problem. IE 4 (and some other MS apps) has a nasty habit of corrupting VBA. The fix is easy. Just do a refresh installation of Office from the CD. Select the option that replaces missing or damaged files. BTW, if you have the SR1 patch installed, the refresh install won't affect it. If you don't have the patch installed, you should download and install it. The path is: http://www.microsoft.com/office/office/enhancements/sr1off97.asp

After installing WOPR 97, when I try to open a document through Explorer or the Documents menu, I get an error message that Word can't find the document and it doesn't load it.

Windows uses DDE to associate .doc files with Word. Some WOPR programs also use DDE, which is very easily interrupted. It seems that if two apps are using DDE at the same time, it can fail. Aside from uninstalling WOPR, there is an easy work-around for this problem. 1) Open My Computer. Click on View, Options.
2) Click on the File Types tab. Scroll down to "Microsoft Word Document". Click on it and click Edit.
3) In the Actions box, click on Open, then the Edit button.
4) Clear (uncheck) the Use DDE check box.
5) In the "Application used to perform action" you will see the path to Winword. Click on it and scroll to the end of that string. Add "%1" (including the quotation marks) to the end. The complete string will read, depending on your installation path:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Winword.exe" /n "%1"
(Note that you may not have installed Office to the same path.) Click OK.

Now you should be able to open documents through Explorer or the Documents menu.

After installing WOPR 97, when I click on the Tools menu, Word crashes. (May also occur in the File menu.)

This was a problem with WOPR 97 versions 1.3 and earlier. Uninstall and download WOPR 1.4 from the Web site.

I got my User ID when I purchased WOPR, but am not sure how to enter it.

In Word, go to Help, About WOPR 97. Click on Enter User Info. Enter your name exactly as it was spelled in the email message you received from us. Enter your User ID. (Your ID will show as all X's for security reasons.)

How do I perform a manual uninstall of WOPR?

You can uninstall manually be deleting the 97wopr.dot file from your Office Startup folder. The default path is:
c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup
Now delete WOPR 97 from your Program Files folder. While it isn't absolutely required, you can delete the Registry entries for WOPR. (But be very careful with the Registry since you can disable a system!) Click on Start, Run and type regedit.exe and click OK. Select: HKEY_CURRENT_USER, then Software. Select Pinecliffe and then click on Edit, Delete. That will complete the uninstall.

When I install WOPR 97 I get an "OLE Automation Error" message.

If you get an Ole Automation Error during the install or use of WOPR, or something does not work as it should, then you should examine the Microsoft Support document as referenced below. It seems that older versions of the Regclean utility are responsible for corrupting the Registry. The document explains the problem and includes a fix for the problem. http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q165/8/61.asp

When I install WOPR 97, I get a message that I have the wrong CTL3D32.DLL file.

Some ill-behaved Installers have a tendency to overwrite one's existing CTL3D32.DLL file and replace it with the wrong version (the most common seems to be overwriting the Win95 version with the WinNT one). This DLL file controls the look and feel of 3D dialogs, message boxes, etc. The WOPR installation routines that we use check to make sure that you are using the correct version of this DLL file and if not, they put up an error message. However, after you clear the message, the Installation (or Update check in this case) will proceed as normal and no harm will come.

I installed Windows 98, and now WOPR 97 does not work correctly.

We have had several reports of WOPR not working after installing Windows 98. The fix is easy. Just do a refresh installation of Office from the CD. Select the option that replaces missing or damaged files. BTW, if you have the SR1 patch installed, the refresh install won't affect it. If you don't have the patch installed, you should download and install it. The patch is:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/office/enhancements/sr1off97.asp

My alarm sounds don't play with WOPR Clock.

This is caused by having sounds turned off in Word. To turn them on, go to Tools, Options General. Check the "Provide Feedback With Sound" checkbox. Now alarm sounds will play. This also turns on the sounds for other WOPR functions, such as switching from the Standard to the Lil'WOPR toolbar.

Is there any place I can ask general Word and Office questions besides Microsoft?

A good place to ask questions is in the WOPR Lounge

I forgot to uninstall my previous version of WOPR before I upgraded Word, and now I have inactive WOPR items on my menu. How do I get rid of these?

You can clean up any menus by clicking on Tools, Customize. When that Customize dialog box is open, you can now customize any menu by clicking on it, then right-clicking on the sub-menu item. You will now be able to deleting it or modify it.

I see WOPRWAYCOOL entries in my right-click menu. How do I get rid of these?

These are also caused by having a previous version of WOPR installed when you upgraded Word. To remove the WOPRWAYCOOL right-click items in Word / WOPR 97. 1) Go to Tools | Customize | Toolbars. Double click on Shortcut Menus.
2) That leads to three groups of menus, labeled Text, Table and Draw. The five WayCool items appeared in several of the Text menus and several of the Table menus. (This information was provided by a WOPR user who did not give the exact menus.)
3) You can remove the items by right-clicking on each and selecting the Delete command.
4) When you exit Word, it will ask if you want to save your changes. Click Yes.
