HP ScanJet v Win 95
Updated by Phyllis Karsten, San Jose, CA on July 10, 1998
I had a problem that no one seemed to be able to solve. I think I
have found the solution and would like to pass the info on to others
who may have similar frustrations.
The problem was that If I left the computer sit idle for about 2
hours, then I couldn't access certain programs. I would get an error
message that Win95 couldn't find the required dll. Also I could use
Word but if I tried to update a graph, I'd get a message that Word
couldn't find Word Graph.
As this seemed to be timer related, I disabled the screen saver and
all the energy saving features -- both in Win95 and DOS. No luck.
Then in a conversation with my son who wanted me to send him a
scanned picture, I mentioned he'd have to wait a few minutes as I
would have to shut down the computer before I could turn on the
scanner. He wanted to know why and I explained that the instructions
say that if the scanner is turned on after the computer is running,
Windows cannot always find the necessary files. "Ah Ha, that's your
go-to-sleep problem, I bet"
I called HP tech support. She right away knew about what I was
talking about, "It is a known bug with the Button Manager". She,
walked me through the necessary steps to disable it. It involved locating
the hpsjbmgr.exe file and changing it's extension from .exe to .old. As I'm not
a Windows expert, I'll not try to explain how one goes about the procedure other
than to be sure to turn off and restart the computer after you've made the
changes. (maybe another reader can provide the exact steps to do this.)
This effectively disables the button manager, so if it's
a needed feature other work arounds might need to be considered.
It's been over six months and I've never had a recurrence of the "go to
sleep-not find dll problem."
