Woody's Office POWER Pack (WOPR)
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

This FAQ lists common questions and answers we get for WOPR Technical Support.
If you don't find your answer here, you can contact our technical support team via the WOPR Technical Support Page.

If you have general Word/Office questions, a good place to ask about them is in the WOPR Lounge.
There you'll find lots of Office Tips, Office Bug-Alerts, Office Bug-Fixes, links to Free Office Software and so on.
There's also a "Peer-to-Peer" forum for WOPR where you can ask your fellow WOPR and Lounge users questions.

GENERAL QUESTIONS

Q:
Where can I get my hands on a downloadable evaluation copy of WOPR XP/2002 (or WOPR 2000) withOUT buying a copy of Ed and Woody's Special Edition Using Office XP (or 2000) book?
A:
I'm afraid that there isn't an downloadable evaluation copy of WOPR XP/2002 (or WOPR 2000) available as we have an exclusive deal with Que Publishing to distribute the software as "bookware" only. However, if you would like to purchase a copy of the software without purchasing a copy of Ed and Woody's Special Edition Using Office XP (or 2000) book, then you may purchase just the WOPR program for $29.95 here:
http://www.wopr.com/order/upgrade
Q:
Since installing WOPR XP/2002, I continually get a macro security warning about wopr_ui.dot and its macros. How can I reconcile the problem to avoid having to "enable macros" every time?
A:
You are seeing the security warning for WOPR's User Interface template because you have your macro security settings set on Medium. Microsoft Word 2002 defaults to using a security level of High and this is what WOPR is expecting. To stop seeing the warning message each time you start Word, you'll need to reset your macro security settings back to High (or Low, but this is not recommended). To do this, select "Security" from the "Macros" flyout menu on Word's "Tools" menu, and set your security level to High on the "Security Level" tab of the Security dialog box that appears on your screen.
Q:
I just got my Special Edition Using Microsoft Office XP book, but there wasn't a CD-ROM containing WOPR XP/2002 with it. What do I do? The main reason I bought the book was to get WOPR.
A:
Que (the book's publisher) found it was no longer cost effective to include a CD-ROM with the books, especially because everybody these days has Web access. (At least, everybody using Office XP.) To get your copy of WOPR XP - a fully licensed copy, free when you buy the book - go to http://www.quehelp.com/ and click the big button that leads to the WOPR XP download site.
Q:
After running the WOPR XP/2002 setup program, whenever I exit Word, I get the following error:
Runtime error 5852
Requested object not available
Upon installing an error log is also generated.
A:
By any chance, are you still using a beta copy of Microsoft Office XP (such as the Corporate Preview which is beta 2)? If so, that could be what's causing the problem... WOPR XP/2002 was really fine tuned for running under the final release of Microsoft Office XP, and as a result, it may not run properly under any of the earlier Office XP beta versions.
However, you might want to try the following and see if it fixes the problem for you:
  1. Exit All running Microsoft Office applications (including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.).
  2. In the Windows Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs applet, select Microsoft Office XP from the list of installed applications, and click on the Add/Remove button.
  3. In the dialog box that appears, select the "Repair Office" option.
  4. Restart/reboot your computer after the repair has completed.
  5. Rerun WOPR XP/2002's setup program.
Q:
Since installing WOPR XP/2002 (or WOPR 2000) my font names show up properly in Word's font drop-down list, but the document itself does not display them correctly (when in Normal or Outline view). Excel still displays its fonts properly, and the Control Panel fonts utility shows the fonts properly too. Do you know what could be causing this to happen?
A:
Try selecting "Options" from Word's "Tools" menu, flip over to the "View" tab when the Options dialog box appears on your screen, and make sure that the "Draft font" check box is unchecked.
Q:
I can not locate the WOPR XP/2002 download on the QUE web site. Could you please tell me where to go to locate the WOPR XP/2002 download file?
A:
The WOPR XP/2002 download is available on the www.quehelp.com web site, but it's a bit awkward to find. Go to the web site and towards the bottom of the page click on the "access my free content" link under "I own a Que book". On the next page that appears, find the book title that you own from the book list and click on it's "I own" button. From there, you will be take to a page where you'll need to answer a few questions. Once you've done that, you'll be take to your bookshelf page. On the bookshelf page, click the "Power Pack" tab and on that tab you will be able to download WOPR XP/2002.

Q:
I just got my Special Edition Using Microsoft Office XP book, but it has no WOPR XP/2002 disc with it. What do I do? The main reason I bought the book was to get WOPR XP/2002.
A:
Que (the book's publisher) found that it was no longer cost affective for them to include a CD-ROM with the books, so you now have to download your copy of WOPR XP/2002 instead. Some where in the book it should tell you to go to the Que Help web site at www.quehelp.com to download your copy of WOPR. You'll be asked for a "challenge phrase" from the book to confirm that you did indeed purchase a copy before you are allowed to download WOPR.
Once you're at the Que Help web site, go towards the bottom of the page click on the "access my free content" link under "I own a Que book".
Q:
How do I uninstall WOPR from my system?
A:
To remove WOPR from your computer, simply go to the Windows Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs applet, select "WOPR 2000" or "WOPR XP/2002" from the list of installed applications, and click on the "Add/Remove" button. If for some reason the program isn't listed in the list of installed applications, then manually run the program's Uninstaller utility (Uninstal.exe) from its application folder (the default location of this folder is "C:\Program Files\WOPR 2000" for WOPR 2000 and "C:\Program Files\WOPR XP" for WOPR XP/2002).
Q:
How do I perform a manual uninstall of WOPR?
A:
You can manually uninstall WOPR by following these steps:

  1. Exit all running Microsoft Office applications (e.g. Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and FrontPage).
  2. Delete the following files from Microsoft Word's Startup folder (the default location of Microsoft Word's Startup folder is "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Startup" under Word 2000 or "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\Startup" under Word XP/2002 for single-user PCs, or "C:\Windows(Winnt)\Profiles\<User_Name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\startup" or "C:\Documents and Settings\<User_Name>\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates" under both Word 2000 and Word XP/2002 for multi-user PCs). If you can't locate Word's Startup folder, you can use the Windows Search for Files utility to find and always delete the files.
    Wopr_ui.dot
    Wopr_lib.dot (WOPR 2000 only)
    Worp_lib.dot.lnk (WOPR XP/2002 only)
FileNew.dot (only if WOPR 2000's FileNew component is installed)
FloppyCopy.dot (only if WOPR 2000's FloppyCopy component is installed)
FloppyCopy.dot.lnk (only if WOPR XP/2002's FloppyCopy component is installed)
(note that the .LNK files are shortcuts so the .LNK extension may not always be visible)
  3. Delete the WOPR program folder and all of its contents (including all of its subfolders). The default location of the WOPR program folder is "C:\Program Files\WOPR 2000" for WOPR 2000 or "C:\Program Files\WOPR XP" for WOPR XP/2002.
  4. While it isn't absolutely required, you can also delete the Registry entries for WOPR. (but be very careful with the Registry since you can easily disturb your system!) To do this, click on the Windows Start menu, then click on Run, and type "regedit.exe" into the Run dialog box and click the OK button. Select: HKEY_CURRENT_USER, then Software. Select Pinecliffe and then click on Edit, Delete. Do the same for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Pinecliffe and that will complete the manual uninstall.
Q:
After installing (or during the installation process) WOPR, I open Word and:
-
receive a "Could not open macro storage" error message.
-
receive a "Compile error in hidden module" error message.
-
receive run-time error messages such as "unable to create embedded object," "object server not correctly registered," "subscript out of range," etc.
-
my hard drive runs for a second or two, but ultimately nothing happens.
-
experience General Protection Faults (GPFs) and/or Internal Protection Faults (IPFs) in Word.
-
experience entire system crashes.
What gives?
A:
The most common reason for receiving these types of problems after installing WOPR is a corrupted Office/Word/VBA installation. Try rerunning Word/Office XP's Setup program (this can be done using the Windows Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs applet) and selecting the option to "Repair Office" (all of your current program settings will be retained during the repair). The repair seems to give Office/Word/VBA enough of a kick start to get it going again. After doing the repair, try reinstalling WOPR and see if it works any better for you now (if not, you may have to completely uninstall/reinstall Word/Office).
Also, Microsoft has the following knowledge base article that talks a bit about resolving macro storage problems (note that Microsoft relates the problem to opening the VB Editor, but it can also happen any time VBA code tries to run with or without the VB Editor being open, and since WOPR is written entirely in VB/VBA code, the article still applies):

Q:
After installing WOPR (or during the installation process), I open Microsoft Word and receive one of the following error messages:
-
Could not load an object because it is not available on this machine.
-
Compile error: ActiveX component can't create object.
-
Run-time error '429':

Could not find the specified object.
A:
The most common reason for receiving these types of error messages after installing WOPR is a corrupted Office/Word/VBA installation. Try the following and see if it fixes the problem for you:
  1. Exit all running Microsoft Office applications (including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.).
  2. In the Windows Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs applet, select Microsoft Office from the list of installed applications, and click on the Add/Remove button.
  3. In the dialog box that appears, select the "Repair Office" option.
  4. Restart/reboot your computer after the repair has completed.
  5. Rerun WOPR's setup program.
Q:
Is there any place I can ask general Word and Office questions besides Microsoft?
A:
A good place to ask questions is in the WOPR Lounge. Go to our Web site at www.wopr.com, and click on the link for the WOPR Lounge. In addition to the WOPR Team members, there is an amazing group of knowledgeable Office folk who hang out there.
Q:
I forgot to uninstall my previous version of WOPR before I upgraded Word, and now I have inactive WOPR items on my menus. How do I get rid of these?
A:
You can clean up any menus by clicking on Tools / Customize. When the Customize dialog box is open, you can customize any menu by clicking on it, then right-clicking on the sub-menu item. You will now be able to delete or modify the menu item.
Tip: You can also remove any menu or toolbar items by simply holding down the Alt key on your keyboard and dragging the item off of its menu/toolbar.
Q:
Can I use WOPR 2000 or WOPR XP/2002 with previous versions of Microsoft Word?
A:
No. WOPR 2000 will only work with Microsoft Word/Office 2000 and WOPR XP/2002 will only work with Microsoft Word 2002/Office XP. There are versions of WOPR available for previous versions of Word on our Web site at www.wopr.com.
Note: See the following Q&A for more information.
Q:
Does WOPR/Enveloper 2000 work with Microsoft Office XP?

Or...
Q:
I just realized that WOPR/Enveloper 2000 will not work under Microsoft Office XP. Will there be a version of Woody's Office POWER Pack (WOPR) for use with Microsoft Office XP (or, in particular, Microsoft Word 2002)?
A:
WOPR 2000 (including Enveloper 2000) was only designed to work with Microsoft Office/Word 2000 (Version 9.0). If you are running Microsoft Office XP/Word 2002 then you will need to upgrade to WOPR XP/2002. The newest version of WOPR has been completed and will be shipping with Ed Bott and Woody Leonhard's new book "Special Edition Using Microsoft Office XP". The book is scheduled for publication on or around May 18th, but you can pre-order a copy of the book (which includes a fully licensed copy of WOPR XP/2002) for a discounted price from Amazon.com by going here:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0789725134/mikecraven-20
If you wish to upgrade to the next version of WOPR without purchasing a copy of Ed and Woody's SEU Office XP book, then you may purchase just the WOPR XP/2002 upgrade for $29.95 here:

Q:
Does WOPR/Enveloper 97 work with Microsoft Office 2000?

Or...
Q:
I just realized that WOPR/Enveloper 97 will not work under Microsoft Office 2000. Is there a version of Woody's Office POWER Pack (WOPR) for use with Microsoft Office 2000 (or, in particular, Microsoft Word 2000)?
A:
WOPR 97 (including Enveloper 97) was only designed to work with Microsoft Office/Word 97 (Version 8.0). If you are running Microsoft Office/Word 2000 then you will need to upgrade to WOPR 2000. WOPR 2000 ships with Ed Bott and Woody Leonhard's "Special Edition Using Microsoft Office 2000" book. Q:
I was wondering about a feature from WOPR 2000 that I am having a hard time finding in WOPR XP/2002... The ability to change/customize the folder/places list for the common Save As and Open dialog boxes. can you help me with this?
A:
That feature was called the "WOPR PlaceBar Customizer", but it is no longer part of WOPR XP/2002 since Microsoft has built facilities for customizing the PlaceBar directly into Office XP now (available under the "Tools" drop down button in the Open and Save As dialogs, and/or by right-clicking on any of the items in the Places Bar).
Instead, in WOPR XP/2002 we've replaced the PlaceBar Customizer with a utility named "Task Pane Customizer" that allows you to customize the 'New Document', 'New Workbook', 'New Presentation', 'New File', and 'New Page or Web' Task Panes in each of the host Office applications (much like the PlaceBar Customizer allowed you to customize the Places Bar in Office 2000).
Note: See the section titled "WOPR PLACEBAR CUSTOMIZER" for more information on this subject.
Q:
I have misplaced, lost, or broken the CD-ROM that came with my Special Edition Using... book (or my CD-ROM is defective). I would like to install/reinstall WOPR, but need a new CD. Could you ship me a replacement CD?
A:
No. We only handle technical support for WOPR. For any problems with the CD-ROM that came with your book (such as obtaining a replacement CD, etc.), you'll need to contact the book's publisher (Que/Macmillan Publishing) by going to:
http://www.quepublishing.com/press/CSupport_form.cfm
You will have to fill out a form in which describing the problems you're having. Once the form has been submitted, it will go to Que/Macmillan's tech support center and they will address the issue accordingly.
Q:
What exactly is title of Ed Bott and Woody Leonhard's new book? I'm confused by all of the naming conventions being used by Microsoft for their latest release of their Office suite.
A:
The exact title for Ed and Woody's newest Office book is "Special Edition Using Microsoft Office XP."
As for all of the Office naming conventions, that's definitely a confusing one now isn't it... Microsoft really dropped the ball when they named their latest version of the Office suite. The official name for the Office suite is "Microsoft Office XP" (where "XP" stands for "experience"), but each of the individual applications such as Word, Excel, etc. are named something like "Microsoft Word 2002." This is the reason we named our newest version of our Woody's Office POWER Pack software as "WOPR XP/2002". Here's a brief note from one of our colleagues on the matter:
"Note: We didn't do it, honest! We didn't have anything to do with the dizzying array of names Microsoft uses for Office XP, also known as Office 2002, and in some circles Office 10 but this latter name is rarely used. If you run any Office XP application--for example, Word--and click Help, About, the resulting dialog box will display the text "Microsoft Word 2002 (10.xxxx.yyyy)." So... XP = 2002 = 10. That's the formula. We have chosen to use "XP" and "2002" in our product names to try and minimize the confusion."
So, as you can see, you're not the only one confused by the whole naming convention used by Microsoft for Office XP/2002.
Q:
When I try to install WOPR 2000 under my NT Workstation I keep getting crashes and Dr. Watson reports. Why doesn't WOPR 2000 work properly with Windows NT 4.0?
A:
While WOPR 2000 doesn't really work under the true "multi-user" environment of Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, it will install and run just fine under that OS as long as you install it for the currently logged on user (such as the Administrator, etc.) and that user has full administrator rights.
We put a lot of effort into making the new release of WOPR XP/2002 run properly for multiple users under Windows NT/2000/XP, but currently we do not have any plans for updating WOPR 2000 the same way.
It is possible that your system is having problems running the WOPR FileNew and possibly the WOPR FloppyCopy components, so you might want to try re-running WOPR 2000's Setup program and uninstalling those two components and see if that helps stop the crashes for you.

WOPR COMMANDER

Q:
I have been working with multiple apps open and for some reason all of the sudden I will find myself switched to Word... For a while I thought this was some sort of bug but I discovered that anytime I mouse over the WOPR Commander in the system tray it automatically switches the task to Word. Is this intentional?
A:
Yes, if Word doesn't have the focus (or if it's minimized) when the user moves their mouse over the WOPR Commander's system tray icon, Word will automatically take the focus (and will be restored to its previous windows state if it was minimized). If multiple documents or mail messages are open, then the last used document or mail message gets the focus. This is "by design" and provides quick access to Microsoft Word at all times.
Note: The WOPR Commander is only available in WOPR XP/2002.

ENVELOPER

Q:
How do I get my envelope templates to transfer from WOPR/Enveloper 2000 to WOPR/Enveloper XP/2002?
A:
First off, do you have the latest version of WOPR XP/2002 installed? The original release of WOPR XP/2002 was Version 1.00.0011 and it had a small bug in the Enveloper Installer which prevented it from properly locating your old WOPR/Enveloper 2000 generated envelope templates. This was corrected in the latest build of WOPR XP/2002 (i.e. Version 1.00.0015 or later).
To check your WOPR version, simply select "About WOPR" from the WOPR Commander's main popup menu (which is accessed via the system tray area of your Windows Task Bar), and read the version number from the About WOPR dialog box that appears on your screen. If you don't have Version 1.00.0015 or later installed, then flip over to the "Update" tab and run the Auto-Updater program to download the latest version of WOPR XP/2002.
Once you run the latest WOPR version's Installer (and then subsequently run Enveloper again for the first time after installing the update), you should get prompted to convert all of your old envelope templates over to the new Enveloper XP/2002 format. Also, during Enveloper's initial setup, make sure that you point your envelope storage path/folder over to the folder containing all of your old envelope templates (this folder should be something like "C:\My Documents\Env").
If installing the latest version of WOPR still fails to locate your old envelope templates, then simply copy all of your templates into Enveloper XP/2002's current envelope storage folder (again this should be something like "C:\My Documents\Env" or "C:\My Documents\My Envelopes"), and then run the Enveloper Converter tool from the WOPR Commander's "Enveloper Tools" fly-out menu. After doing that, you'll also need to run Enveloper Customize tool from the WOPR Commander's "Enveloper Tools" in order to get Enveloper to recognize the newly added/converted envelope templates (the Customizer tool will automatically add them to the list of available envelopes as soon as you run it).
Hoe this helps some...
Q:
I have selected my printer feed method correctly, but the envelopes still don’t print right. What can I do about it?
A:
Some printers, such as ink jet printers, require that the orientation or the "face up / face down" settings be reversed. It might take some experimentation to make things work.
A good test is to run a full sheet of paper through your printer when testing envelope printing so that you can see if it is printing in the wrong location.
Another thing that works for some printers is to select the "Fit Page to Envelope" check box. You can find this through Tools, Enveloper Tools, Customize. Then click Envelope List, then Edit. Select the Printer Setup tab.
Make sure that your Envelope Source is correct for your printer. You can change it through the Printer Setup tab. (See the previous paragraph on how to get to the dialog for changing that.) You might need to experiment with your Envelope Source as well.
Q:
Envelopes do not feed and print correctly when I try to print envelopes on my printer using the default feed tray. However, the envelopes print and feed correctly when I use Word's built-in envelope printing utility. What am I doing wrong?
A:
Normally when the built-in envelope utility works correctly, but Enveloper doesn't, you probably need to make sure that the "Fit page to Envelope" setting is enabled for your Enveloper envelope templates. That way, there's no printer-driver differences/discrepancies between Word and Enveloper.
To do this in WOPR XP/2002 select "Customize Enveloper" from the WOPR Commander's "Enveloper Tools" fly-out menu, or in WOPR 2000, select "Customize" from the "Enveloper Tools" fly-out menu listed on Microsoft Word's "Tools" menu, or in WOPR 97, select "Customize" from the "Enveloper 97" fly-out menu listed on Microsoft Word's "Tools" menu. Once the Enveloper Customize dialog box appears, flip over to the "Envelope List" tab, select your envelope, and click on the Edit button. Select the "Printer Setup" sub-tab of the "Envelope Settings" tab and make sure that the "Fit page to Envelope" setting is checked. Click the "Test Print" button to test print your envelope with the new "Fit page to Envelope" setting. If the envelope prints okay, click the "Save & Close Env" button to save your changes and repeat the process for all of your envelopes.
Q:
I keep editing my envelopes, but when I print the next one it goes back to the previous version. What can I do about it?
A:
This is because you've edited the envelope generated by Enveloper and not the envelope template itself. When you create a new envelope, Enveloper lets you make any last minute changes to that envelope before printing it. But that doesn’t change the template itself. To get your changes to "stick", in WOPR XP/2002 select "Customize Enveloper" from the WOPR Commander's "Enveloper Tools" fly-out menu, or in WOPR 2000, select "Customize" from the "Enveloper Tools" fly-out menu listed on Microsoft Word's "Tools" menu, or in WOPR 97, select "Customize" from the "Enveloper 97" fly-out menu listed on Microsoft Word's "Tools" menu. Click on the "Envelope List" tab, select your envelope, and then click on the Edit button. Make your changes in the envelope template, and then Save and Close it.
Tip: You can have as many templates as you like. If you are constantly making the same changes over and over, you might want to make new envelope templates for the changes.
Q:
Enveloper won’t let me select my other envelope templates. It just prints as soon as I click on the icon without any prompts. What can I do about it?
A:
You have Expert Mode turned on, which gives no prompts and prints with the default template. To turn this off, in WOPR XP/2002 select "Customize Enveloper" from the WOPR Commander's "Enveloper Tools" fly-out menu, or in WOPR 2000, select "Customize" from the "Enveloper Tools" fly-out menu listed on Microsoft Word's "Tools" menu, or in WOPR 97, select "Customize" from the "Enveloper 97" fly-out menu listed on Microsoft Word's "Tools" menu. Select either Intermediate or Beginner mode (Intermediate is most people’s preferred setting).
Q:
I’ve got envelope templates from Enveloper 2000 (or Enveloper 97), but Enveloper XP/2002’s (or Enveloper 2000's) templates are in a new folder. How can I get Enveloper to recognize them?
A:
Just copy the old Enveloper templates into the new "My Envelopes" (or "Env") folder, which is by default "C:\My Documents\My Envelopes" (or "C:\My Documents\ENV"). Enveloper XP/2002 (or Enveloper 2000) will automatically recognize the envelope templates the next time you use Enveloper Customize. You may also need to convert the envelope templates using Enveloper's "EnvConvert" macro. To do this, in WOPR XP/2002 select "Customize Enveloper" from the WOPR Commander's "Enveloper Tools" fly-out menu, or in WOPR 2000, select "Customize" from the "Enveloper Tools" fly-out menu listed on Microsoft Word's "Tools" menu, or in WOPR 97, select "Customize" from the "Enveloper 97" fly-out menu listed on Microsoft Word's "Tools" menu. This will add all of your old envelope templates to Enveloper. Exit Enveloper Customize and select "Macro" from the "Macros" fly-out menu on Word's "Tools" menu. In the Macros dialog box that appears, select "EnvrXP.dot" (or "Envr2k.dot") from the "Macros in" drop-down list, select the "EnvConvert.MAIN" macro from the "Macro name" list, and click the "Run" button.
Q:
I converted my envelope templates, but they don’t print correctly.

Or...
Q:
I get error messages when I try to use or edit my converted envelope templates.
A:
Under certain conditions, envelope templates from previous versions of Enveloper may not convert correctly. You might get file-corrupted error messages, or you may not be able to get your envelopes to print correctly regardless of what you do. In these cases you will have to create new envelope templates based on the sample envelope template, and delete the converted templates.
Q:
I’ve got a pretty complex letterhead template, and Enveloper is having trouble finding my addressee. What can I do about it?
A:
Enveloper starts at the top of your document and looks for the addressee block. However, some complex templates/documents can cause Enveloper to miss the addressee. There are several things you can do to resolve this. First, just highlight the addressee block before running Enveloper. Enveloper will assume that what is selected is the addressee.
Alternatively, you can use Enveloper's Skip Lines address grab method. This setting tells Enveloper to look for the addressee a specified number of lines down from the top of your document. See Enveloper's help topic in the WOPR Help file for more information about setting the Addressee Grab Method.
Q:
I keep getting Margins are set outside printable area errors, but the envelope prints out just fine. How can I get rid of these error messages?
A:
You'll need to adjust the minimum margins that Enveloper uses for its envelopes. In WOPR XP/2002 select "Customize Enveloper" from the WOPR Commander's "Enveloper Tools" fly-out menu, or in WOPR 2000, select "Customize" from the "Enveloper Tools" fly-out menu listed on Microsoft Word's "Tools" menu, or in WOPR 97, select "Customize" from the "Enveloper 97" fly-out menu listed on Microsoft Word's "Tools" menu. Once the Enveloper Customize dialog box appears, flip over to the "Envelope List" tab, select your envelope, and click on the Edit button. Select the "Margins & Barcodes" sub-tab of the "Envelope Settings" tab and find the proper minimum margins for your printer by clicking on the "Auto Margins" button. Enveloper will determine the minimum margins that can be used by your printer driver and enter them into the "Minimum Margins" boxes that are just above the Auto Margins button. Click the "Test Print" button to test print your envelope with the new margin settings. If the envelope prints okay, click the "Save & Close Env" button to save your margin settings and repeat the process for all of your envelopes.
If on the other hand, you still get the "margins out of printable area of page" error message, then you'll need to do some experimenting to find out which margin settings work the best for your printer. Follow the steps listed above to get to the Minimum Margins boxes for your envelope and increase the various minimum margin values for the envelope a bit at a time until you find the correct margin settings for your printer that stop the error message from appearing. Usually, it is just one or two of the margin values that are causing your printer driver to complain. Once you find the perfect margin settings for your printer, copy the margin values to all of your envelope templates.
Q:
When I click the Address Book button in Enveloper and select one of my Outlook contacts from the list of available contacts, I can not get the contact's full address to paste into Enveloper. Why not?
A:
If you have Outlook 2000 running under "Corporate or Workgroup" mode (you can tell which mode Outlook is currently running in by selecting "About Microsoft Outlook" from Outlook's Help menu and looking at the second line of text in the About dialog box that appears), then Word's address book (which is what Enveloper uses by default) will only paste in addresses from your contacts if the address is setup as the contact's mailing address. To set an address as a contact's mailing address, you need to open the contact in Outlook, select the address you wish to use for the contact from the list of available addresses, and check the "This is the mailing address" checkbox.
On the other hand, if you have Outlook running under "Internet Mail Only" mode (you can reconfigure the mode Outlook is using via Tools / Options / Mail Delivery (tab) / Reconfigure Mail Support (button)), then Word's address book will only paste in addresses from your contacts if the address is the contact's business address. Thus, if you are running in Internet Mail Only mode, then you need to make sure that all of the addresses you need to access via Word/Enveloper are entered as your contact's business address (even if it's their home address, etc.). Sorry, but that's just the way Microsoft made things work.
Q:
Is there a way to designate the default printer for my envelopes so I do not have to pick it each time I print an envelope?
A:
Yes. In WOPR XP/2002 select "Customize Enveloper" from the WOPR Commander's "Enveloper Tools" fly-out menu, or in WOPR 2000, select "Customize" from the "Enveloper Tools" fly-out menu listed on Microsoft Word's "Tools" menu, or in WOPR 97, select "Customize" from the "Enveloper 97" fly-out menu listed on Microsoft Word's "Tools" menu, and then do the following:
  1. In the Enveloper Customize dialog box that appears, select the "Envelope List" tab.
  2. Select your desired envelope from the "Envelope Description" list and click the "Edit" button.
  3. On the "Envelope Settings" tab that appears, select the "Printer Setup" tab.
  4. From the drop-down "Printer Driver" list, select any of the installed printer drivers for use with the envelope. Selecting "(Default)" for the printer driver will cause Enveloper to print the selected envelope to the default printer for your computer.
  5. Click the "Save & Close Env" button.
  6. Repeat steps 2-5 above for all envelope templates you wish to change the printer for.
Q:
Enveloper prints an error message (where the bar codes would be) stating that the the ZIP codes are wrong. How do I correct this problem?
A:
If your envelope's address does not actually have a valid ZIP code, the error message will appear on the envelope. In the old days, the error message was displayed as Text, so formatting the ZIP code with WOPR's "Zip" font used to hide the error message. However, it appears that Microsoft has gone and turned the error message into a bitmap (I think) so we can no longer hide it with the font trick.
Thus, if you use a valid address for your envelopes, then the error message should go away. Or you can simply turn off the printing of bar codes in the main Enveloper dialog box to get rid of the error message.
Q:
Enveloper prints an error message (where the bar codes would be) stating that the the ZIP codes are wrong. How do I correct this problem? (non-U.S.)
A:
It appears that in Word 2000/2002, Microsoft has gone and turned envelope bar code error messages into graphics that print on the envelope whenever there is a problem with the bar codes. In the old days, the error message was always displayed as Text, so formatting the ZIP code with WOPR's "Zip" font used to hide the error message. However, since Microsoft has gone and turned the error message into a bitmap we can no longer hide it using the font trick.
Since you are outside of the U.S., the best thing for you to do to stop the error messages from printing on your envelopes is to simply use Enveloper Customize to disable the bar codes (run Enveloper Customize, flip to the "Enveloper Options" tab, and on the "Settings" sub tab uncheck the "Print POSTNET Bar Codes" check box), or you can simply uncheck the "Print Bar Code" check box in Enveloper's main dialog box each time you print an envelope using Enveloper.

WOPR FILE MANAGER

Q:
On some of my files, the File Giblets (text preview) window shows control codes at the top.
A:
WOPR File Manager's File Giblets feature is designed to work with Word 97/2000/XP documents. Some older Word documents, or documents created with other applications won't display properly.
Q:
I have documents with extensions other than "DOC" that I need to access. How can I get the WOPR File Manager to show me these extensions automatically?
A:
You can change any cubbyhole to default to using a different file type. To change the cubbyhole, select Cubbyholes from the WOPR File Manager main dialog box. From here you can select a different file type, or create a new one by selecting the Add button.

WOPR IMAGE EXTRACTOR

Q:
I want to change a toolbar button. Can I just edit my toolbar button in place?
A:
You can't directly modify a menu or toolbar button using Image Extractor. You must use the "Copy to Clipboard" feature of the Image Extractor and modify your toolbars or menus through the host application's Customize dialog.

WOPR PLACEBAR CUSTOMIZER

Q:
I've been to your site and cannot see how to download the WOPR PlaceBar Customizer. I followed the references to the Microsoft Office Update site, but cannot find the download. I've been told that the PlaceBar Customizer is a free add-in that can be downloaded from the Microsoft Office Update/WOPR web site. Is this true, and if so, can you please tell me where I can find it?

Or...
Q:
I'd like to download a version of your WOPR PlaceBar Customizer utility, but I can't find where I have to download it from. I have checked the Microsoft Office Update web site, but this just re-directs me back to an informational page. How can I get a copy of this very useful utility?
A:
Alas, the WOPR PlaceBar Customizer is now only available as part of the Woody's Office POWER Pack (WOPR) 2000 add-in package. Do you have a copy? If not, then you can get a fully registered copy of WOPR 2000 by purchasing a copy of Ed Bott and Woody Leonhard's "Special Edition Using Office 2000" book. Amazon generally has the best price on the book, so check it out at:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0789718421/mikecraven-20
Note that we once had an exclusive deal with Microsoft to distribute a "freebie" version of the PlaceBar Customizer on their Office Update site, but they've since pulled the plug on the deal. The only way to get it now is with the WOPR 2000 add-in package.
Or, if you do not wish to purchase a copy of Ed and Woody's SEU Office 2000 book, then you may purchase just the WOPR 2000 program directly from us for $29.95 here:

Q:
Previously, I had Office 2000 and WOPR 2000 installed (I may have originally installed Placebar Customizer and then installed WOPR 2000 afterwards). I recently upgraded to Office XP and WOPR XP/2002. Word 2002 seems to have retained the Placebar Customizer settings from the previous version of Word and WOPR. I am unable to move the current Placebar folders up or down and the "Add to my places" choice under the "Tools" menu in the "Open Dialog Box" is greyed out. Is there a way to reset the Placebar settings in Word 2002?
A:
Microsoft did a pretty poor job of implementing the places bar customization tools into the common dialogs. To add a new place to the places bar (without the "Add to my places" item being grayed out on the popup menu), you have to move to the "parent" folder, select the "subfolder" you wish to add in the folders/file list, and then click on the "Tools" button (for example if you wanted to add the folder "C:\My Documents\My Pictures" to the places bar, you'd go to "C:\My Documents" and then select/highlight the "My Pictures" subfolder, and then click on the Tools button.). This will drop-down a menu and there will be an item for adding the selected subfolder to the places bar. To do anything else to the place such as renaming it, moving it up or down, etc., you should then be able to right click on the place in the places bar and select the desired item from the popup menu that appears.
As for removing any of the old settings from the PlaceBar Customizer, it is possible that Office XP migrated the old settings found in the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Common\Open Find\Places

To the new one located at:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Common\Open Find\Places

Thus, you should just be able to delete the above mentioned registry keys (and all of their sub keys) to completely reset the Places Bar in your Office XP common File Open and File Save As dialog boxes.

Q:
Is there any way to change the icons associated with the places in the Microsoft Office 2000 common dialog's Places Bar using the WOPR PlaceBar Customizer utility?
A:
Alas, Microsoft didn't provide any hooks for changing the icons on the Places Bar, so you're stuck using the default one they gave you. Someone out there may know how to change the icons, but as far as we know, it can't be done.
Q:
I'm using WOPR XP/2002 under Microsoft Office XP and I can't seem to find the WOPR PlaceBar Customizer utility that I used to use in Microsoft Office 2000. Can you tell me how I can customize the Office common dialog box's Places Bar using WOPR XP/2002?
A:
If you've upgraded to Microsoft Office XP then you don't need the WOPR PlaceBar Customizer as Microsoft has now built all of its functionality directly into the common File Open and File Save As dialog boxes in Office XP (you can customize the places using the Tools drop-down menu and by right-clicking on the places in the Places Bar in any of the common dialog boxes).

WOPR TWO-BY-FOUR (2x4)

Q:
Since support is no longer being offered on WOPR 97's 2x4 utility, do you know of anyone who markets a booklet building tool for use with Microsoft Word?
A:
I believe that Microsoft has now built this functionality (or something very similar to it) into the latest version of Microsoft Word (i.e. in Microsoft Office XP/Word 2002). Also, many of the printer manufacturers are now shipping drivers for their printers that support booklet printing, etc. Thus, you might want to check with your printer manufacturer and see if they happen to have a newer driver for your printer that supports that option. Lastly, there's a commercially available product called "ClickBook" that does booklet printing, etc. You can get more information on or purchase the product here:

WOPR TOOLBARS

Q:
I would like the WOPR Formatting Toolbar/WOPR Module Tools Toolbar to always be visible. Whenever I start Microsoft Word, it is hidden by default and I must toggle it on each time I want to use it. How do I keep it visible?
A:
The WOPR Formatting Toolbar/WOPR Module Tools Toolbar "by design" needs to be toggled on each time you restart Word. While I agree that it would be nice to leave it open on the screen, it's not possible due to the fact that it is dynamically loaded the first time you use it... In order to reduce the startup time of Microsoft Word while WOPR is installed (and to reduce overall memory consumption), most of the WOPR components are setup to "load on demand". As a result, the WOPR Formatting Toolbar/WOPR Module Tools Toolbar is not available for Word to display each time it restarts. You have to access it once so that its template is loaded and it can be used. Again I agree that it would be nice to have it remain open on the screen, but we had to make the choice between convenience and affecting Word's load time, so we chose the later as long startup times for Word seem to bother the largest number of people.
